Ooh, this one starts off a bit epic. Washes of watery ambient sound give off a Pink Floyd-y vibe before proggy vocals and chuggy strumming make their way through the haze, dreamily repeating the mantra "You're like the ocean". It seems safe to say that they're not shy about going big and ambitious with shit, something confirmed by the copious amounts of strings, effects and layered harmonies that make up much of this album - not to mention the occasional flirtation with brass and Morricone guitars. They've got a studio and they're definitely not afraid to use it; in this case as a kitchen in which they create steaming anthemic shoegaze pies which'll burn the roof of your mouth as you're punching the air with triumph over.. Something. The fella's vocals are reminding me quite a bit of Alan Sparhawk on a lot of this LP I've got to say. Not massively my thing but they seem pretty good at what they do.The Besnard Lakes’ twisting chronicle, or fevered dream, of spies,
double agents, novelists and aspiring rock gods has turned violent.
Full-length follow up to The Besnard Lakes critically
lauded ‘Breakthrough’, which sold over 15K copies in
the United States, and was included in year-end best of
lists by Mojo, NME and Uncut.
