And now I'm thoroughly expected to have my face melted off by Burning Star Core. Never really heard much by these guys before but I thought now is the time! This is an interesting concept for an album and not one I've heard of before. It's (to quote the press releases) 'One long piece, broken into 4 movements, culled from over 60 live performances, spanning years & continents.' 'Lunacy' I hear you cry... You're probably right. It's been on for a good quarter of an hour though now and it sounds seamless. The music is a super powerful space rock jam which is proper brain meltingly intense. It sounds like everything is falling down around the band as they're playing. Shrill guitars and free form drumming over intense feedback and psychedelia.... It's making me want to get mega chonged and stop working. God damn these space rock jams! One long piece, broken into 4 movements, culled from over 60 live performances, spanning years &
continents. These formerly disparate relics now exist as one: a sonic document of the present.
Rarely is the live album a work of art. Inspired by
these singular instances (‘Grayfolded’ by The
Grateful Dead; ‘Sonic Death’ by Sonic
Youth; ‘In Search Of Spaces’ by Flying
Saucer Attack), C. Spencer Yeh, the lone
constant of the long-running Burning Star Core
project, conceptualized ‘Papercuts Theater’:
one long piece (broken into four movements)
culled from over sixty live performances.
