Yuk, the press release for this is a bit dodge.. Banging about how the nippers are stepping away from their crunky wonkstep and spraypainting "Hey, jazz is kewl!" all over your dad's Mondeo. Whatever Trevor. In any case is does mention sterling local heroes TrioVD who Polar Bear do share a vague similarity with in some senses, albeit with the experimental rock edge stripped right back and a truckload of soul influences implanted in its place. Both of those acts share members with Acoustic Ladyland and fans of their stuff looking for a more laid-back, late night, loft scene kind of feel will do well to have a little listen I'd say. Quite an array of styles and moods are amassed throughout the course of the album, from rhythmic head-nodders to incredibly agile confusers to the most sighing of swingers.. There's absolutely no doubting their skills and depth of knowledge of the genres they're bending and when it all comes together it's a very impressive thing indeed.* Peepers is the fourth album by Sebastian Rochford’s Polar Bear, and their first for The Leaf Label
* 4/5 REVIEW IN MOJO: "IT'S JAZZ SHORN OF CLICHE WITH ELIPTICAL NODS TO JAMES 'BLOOD' ULMER, TORTOISE AND THE FREE-JAZZ COSMOS ALONG THE WAY."
* 4/5 IN JAZZWISE: "FIRST SERIOUS CONTENDER FOR ALBUM OF 2010."
* 4/5 REVIEW IN UNCUT: "POST-JAZZ OUTFIT MOVE GUITARWARDS."
* 4/5 IN OMM: "MOURNFUL AND BESERK FUN.'
* The album was inspired by classic soul as much as the influences of jazz, rock, folk and electronica that permeated previous albums and brought Polar Bear to a young and diverse audience
* Polar Bear’s second album, Held On The Tips Of Fingers, was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music prize nomination and was named as one of Jazzwise magazine’s 100 Jazz Albums That Shook The World, and one of The Guardian’s 1000 Albums To Before You Die.
* Bandleader Rochford is one of the most respected percussionists working in contemporary music, winning a BBC Jazz Awards Rising Star award in 2005. He plays with Acoustic Ladyland, Fulborn Teversham and Basquiat Strings, among others. He has worked with everyone from Joanna MacGregor and Andy Sheppard, Brian Eno and David Byrne, to Pete Doherty and Herbie Hancock.
* Polar Bear’s line up also includes Pete Wareham (Acoustic Ladyland), Tom Herbert (The Invisible), Mark Lockheart (Loose Tubes) and Leafcutter John
* Polar Bear are part of the revival in British jazz (alongside artists like Portico Quartet, Led Bib and Trio VD) that has seen young people identify with jazz once again
* TRACKLIST: 1. Happy For You 2. Bap Bap Bap 3. Drunken Pharaoh 4. The Love Didn't Go Anywhere 5. A New Morning Will Come 6. Peepers 7. Bump 8. Scream 9. Hope Every Day Is A Happy New Year 10. Want To Believe Everything 11. Finding Our Feet 12. All Here
