I Was A King - Not Like This

Not Like This by I Was A King

“Imagine Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend", only with Kevin Shields and J Mascis subbed in…and you get an idea of I Was A King's cumulative, generation-spanning appeal”- PITCHFORK

“Absolutely brilliant of course.” - NME

The Too Pure Singles Club kicks off a third year of trading with their thirteenth 7” courtesy of Norway’s much loved alt-pop collective I Was A King.

Boasting members of Serena Maneesh, Harry’s Gym and Danielson, revolving around frontman and songwriter Frode Strømstad - with the album’s supporting cast including Sufjan Stephens and Gary Olsen of Ladybug Transistor - I Was A King are a misty eyed pop-gaze of West Coast harmonies and ringing Rickenbacker.

Their eponymous titled album gets a full release in the UK on February 7th, this 7” includes a new version of album track Not Like This and a cover of Guided By Voices’ Your Name Is Wild.

Earlier this month they released the single Norman Bleik on Sonic Cathedral, playlisted at NME Radio and featured in NME tracks. The band will return for live dates in the UK in February.

I Was A King will appear at Eurosonic at Groningen in Holland on 14th January and their UK dates will include Club NME at Koko in London on 26th February. More dates to be announced.

An iconic indie label in its day, Too Pure were responsible for bringing the likes of PJ Harvey, Stereolab, Seefeel, Mouse On Mars and mclusky to the m]asses. Now reinvented as a dedicated 7” label, their second run of twelve 7” releases has seen them issue limited and individually hand numbered singles from Pulled Apart By Horses, Peggy Sue, Bear Hands, Friendship, Magic And Fur, Three Trapped Tigers, Skeletons & The Empty Pockets, The Vivians, The Crookes, Copy Haho, The Rifle Volunteer and TAPETHERADIO.
