The Gummy Stumps - First EP- Watts of Goodwill

First EP- Watts of Goodwill by The Gummy Stumps

4...according to our on Thu 28 Jan, 2010.

Don't know anything about Gummy Stumps but i'm digging the name and the wild artwork. Vocals on opener 'Cameo' give them away as Glaswegian for sure. Somewhere between the madness of Killdozer (that'll be the singing that...), Pre Ubu and The Fall these glasgow folks make great upbeat, vocal focused avant new wave rock that sounds strangely familiar, like i'm missing a really obvious influence or something? B-side 'Plea Rejected' reveals further Fall influence with it's repeato riff and general groovy oddness sounding partly made up on the spot. A decidedly wonky vision of a rock band, Gummy Stumps sound amazing to me right about now. I recognize the artwork to be Park Attack related....dunno if that's significant but its very nice.

“sounding like a drunk Shellac playing Immortal Lee Country Killer
covers. Or a Glaswegian Fall playing to belligerent drunks on the
last bus home. Or like if the Blockheads were a cunningly
disguised Lightning Bolt.” cowsarejustfood.wordpress.com
“A guitar/drums/vocals trio they sound like a cross between the
Fall and Lightning Bolt. Actually they don't sound like anyone. The
vocals are bellowed out in a seldom-wavering monotone, whilst the
drums thunder and Rob-from-Park-Attack twists some pretty amazing
noise from his abused guitar. Noisy shouty punk is easy to do –
noisy, shouty punk that sounds like nothing on earth is a lot
harder … the Gummy Stumps couldn't have been better.”
