George Thomas And The Owls - Laughing At The Raging Sea

Laughing At The Raging Sea by George Thomas And The Owls

The artist who helped launch the Red Deer Club label in 2007 returns with 'Laughing At The Raging Sea,' the ¬finalc hapter in a much fabled trilogy of albums. However, we didn't hear much from George Thomas or The Owls for a while. After spending the middle part of the decade building up a cult following with a series of recordings that were in equal parts delightful and ba ing, things suddenly went very quiet. It was therefore with great excitement that we heard rumour this summer of a third studio album in the pipeline. As ever the word studio actually refers to little more than an eight track tape machine, but so far at least, the rare warmth and intimacy of the recordings has justi¬ed this policy.'Laughing At The Raging Sea' is no exception, and for the intrepid souls who have followed those mercurial live shows it feels almost like a greatest hits collection, featuring as it does 'Brighton Pier', 'Pornography' and of course'My Name Is George'. Perhaps thankfully for some, if not others, the now infamous drum machine project has beenlaid aside: "I was trying to be La Roux before La Roux, but it didn't quite work". In its place we se¬nd The Owls onc eagain conjuring more homespun arrangements of pianos and banjos and chiming and crashing things. The resultis an album of lovely charm and individuality that ¬nally sees Mr Thomas come to the forefront as one of the moste ccentrically brilliant songwriters in the UK.George Thomas will be touring both with and without The Owls throughout the UK and USA in late winter and spring. Red Deer Club will also be releasing the 5 CD retrospective box set 'Hiss, Crackle and Pop' in the late springtime.
