Our single of the week (12th February 2010)
...according to our Dave on Thu 11 Feb, 2010.
The new Andrew W.K. single starts with a plaintive piano riff then explodes into grandiose territory.. A la Meat Loaf or Queen at their most pompous. I don't know what to make of the WKminator. Is it pastiche or is it something more serious? If an Andrew W.K. falls in the forest does anyone hear him fall? All these pressing concerns can be discussed at a later date. These songs on this square single sound like homages to RAWK in all its glory. Or leftovers from the Grease soundtrack. I am pushing for this to be the single of the week but some Nordic or hip Californian noise merchant's "haunting" collection of chicken clucks will probably take that precious mantle (eat your words Dave-O!) The B-side "I Wanna Take You On A Date" is the funniest most rocking song I've had the pleasure of listening to fer ages. I'd go on a date with this guy.. Only if he provided the Rohypnol.....Limited edition square vinyl to preceed Andrew's album release. 'I'm A Vagabond', released on square-shaped 7" vinyl (limited to just 500 copies worldwide), is the new single preceding Andrew's collection of rare and unreleased songs, 'Mother Of Mankind'. A man never far from the limelight, since first shooting onto the scene in 2001 with his famed bloody nose, greasy black hair and scruffy white clothes, Andrew W.K. has accomplished more than most can dream of. From presenting "Destroy Build Destroy", the live-action TV show for Cartoon Network (where Andrew gives teens dynamite and bazookas); to giving motivational speeches at high-profile universities like Yale; to collaborating with hip-hop act People Under The Stairs in producing their own version of the Simpson's theme tune as part of the shows 20th season celebrations; to setting up his own record label; and that was just the past few months. When you also consider the fact that he has recently opened his own award winning music venue, Santos Party House, in trendy downtown Manhattan; has been writing monthly advice columns for a Japanese music magazine; produced the Grammy Award nominated album 'Repentance' for reggae legend, Lee "Scratch" Perry; starred in his own TV series on both MTV and VH1, and is currently gearing up for a 7 week stint headlining the Vans Warped Tour right across the US, it's a wonder the man finds any time to practice what he preaches and get in some quality party time! However, it's this willingness to try his hand at such a variety of challenges and to express himself in so many different ways which is Andrew's most intriguing and enduring quality. This single is a future collector's item and a must-have for all fans.
