This CD's called A Young Person's Guide to Kyle Bobby Dunn which is like that John Fahey box set except this one says 'Kyle Bobby Dunn' where the other one says 'John Fahey'. There's two discs and I've just put one on. It's just starting now. There's a note happening. Can't really write something until it changes a bit.. Aaaany minute now. So I'm thinking this is a drone CD and as there's about two-and-a-half hours of it this review's probably not going to be that amazing. I'll just fast-forward through a little bit.. OK so it's well serene and lovely with some subtle electro-orchestral touches happening below the surface, coming in gentle waves a la Stars of the Lid. Fans of those lads or Celer will want to check this out as it's a very classy effort. Although the second CD could be grindcore for all I know.

When I received the album I froze upon its lovely metaphoric cover photo as if I could hear its sound inside the package. Plopped it on the stereo and literally froze. Yes memories and thoughts not thought of in ages began to regale the mind, body and spirit. I thought of old faces and auras to try and thaw myself. I took a 10 hour flight and found myself rewinding back tracks again and again before they even bled into their respective following. I love this record already and can't recommend it enough. Thanks.

What a gorgeous and graceful album from one of today's wisest drone and modern classical workers. Upon hearing 'Miranda Rights' two years ago, I was completely taken by its mix of serene and complex beauty, but his new album (of apparently older recordings) takes the paved beauty to new and interesting levels. Living in icy Montal for the last few years has been wonderfully evocative for which to experience these works. Falling in and out of contact with past relationships and friends is also a great correlation to these sounds. I love it. It's a beautful design corresponding with the best modern compositional or minimal drone I've heard in years! Vous remercier l'tiquette basse de point de l'Angleterre pour mon album prfr dans les ans et pour aider que m'obtiens par l'cole et les temps motifs difficiles. Le c'est vritablement un merveilleuxment bel enregistrement.

ok, this is classical drone music at its finest. i suppose it is easy to simply lump this in with electronic or ambient music drawers and mix it with brian eno, stars of the lid, and the like but this artist has used such pared down and minimalist methods in his playing and recording techniques that what's missing becomes its greatest virtue. isolated but haunting note arrangements create full environments for the listener and make it intriguing and easy to get lost and walk around in... probably for years to come.

This new sheer brilliant offering from Kyle Bobby is pure method, gorgeosity, inexpressibly epic beauty and THE SOUNDTRACK TO THE NEW DECADE. As scary as that may sound, let the fruition happen naturally and organically like the sound itself. 2008's 'Fragments&Compositions album on sedimental records, came through like the sky had holes and began to leak.. this reccord is the filling of an entire ocean from that breakage and it leaves you both calmly and sadly confused as you set sail and get lost in its seemingly limitless waves. In between disc 1 and disc 2 there is a heavenly and tranquil moment of understanding and complete serenity. Disc 2 presents to us a series of teary memories and smoky nostalgic moments that bleed and smear into long guitar, string and horn suites that remind us of distant childhood times, large mountain and forest encompassed afternoons and "voices lost".. Dunn's music is on to something fantastic, ghostly, and painfully human.. your new favorite album.

It is so good to see a new album of his emerging as a two CD set! Great design and "classy effort" for sure, Brett. We first heard his music years ago and loved the sad but beautiful depth and scale. Haunted and heartbroken but optimistic and peaceful. Such a pretty and somewhat overdue release!

What their label says...

Spread across two cds with a total running time of nearly two hours, ‘A Young Person’s Guide To…’ is a stunning collection of recordings from New York based minimalist composer and sound artist Kyle Bobby Dunn.

Four tracks on the first disc originally appeared as the download only album ‘Fervency’, released by the Moodgadget label in 2009. Impressed by Dunn’s sensitive and world-wise compositions, it was felt that the music deserved to be released on a physical format and expanded upon with a second disc containing an additional 60 minutes of music gathered from the same period as the ‘Fervency’ recordings.

Utilising an instrumental palette of guitar, strings and brass, often played by classically trained musicians drafted in on the spur of the moment, the sounds of these sessions were recorded as Dunn dictated and then reworked via computer processing into spine-tingling soundscapes.

Dunn's compositions here are fully rich in timbre, painterly, hopelessly romantic and haunting; balanced between a wash of pure sound and an ornate yet subtle dance of classical instrumentation. Occupying a truly cinematic scope, these pieces can transport the listener from the deepest and most forgotten landscapes to the furthest recesses of time.
