This record left our Brett feeling happy.

Phil says The Album Leaf tend to get compared to Sigur Ros, something which shouldn't be that surprising since their ambient, vaguely post-rocky take on indie does recall them quite heavily. I guess the comparison can't really bother them since they got Birgir Jon Birgisson in to mix A Chorus of Storytellers, their new one on Sub Pop. Their pastoral feel, augmented by subtle electronics also brings later period Hood to mind although their floaty drift is less experimental and melancholy than those Yorkshire heroes. In fact there's quite an uplifting feel to this which is definitely pleasant but veers a little too close to triteness from time to time, for me at least.. But then I'm a hard-hearted one.

What their label says...

‘A Chorus Of Storytellers’ was recorded by Ryan Hadlock in the frosty month of February 2009 at Bear Creek Studio, just outside of Seattle, and it was mixed in the decidedly warmer month of June in Reykjavik, Iceland by Birgir Jon Birgisson (of Sigur Ros).

Those paying attention will notice that this is nearly the same way their last album ‘Into The Blue Again’ was recorded. There is, however, one fundamental difference between this and every other album The Album Leaf has ever recorded.

For the first time in five albums, The Album Leaf recorded as a whole band. In the past, almost every instrument was performed by principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle. This time the whole band was invited to participate and the result is possibly their best record yet.
