The sophomore release from Los Angeles duo, VOICEsVOICEs is a six track
concept record titled, Origins. Recorded in New York city by Guillermo
Scott Herren aka Prefuse 73, over a span of one week during the early
summer of 2009, Herren melds the guitar drone, percussive beats, vocal
loopings of Nico Turner and Jenean Farris to a whole new level. They
have toured the USA with Brightblack Morning Light, Corridor and Rio En
Medio and will head out again with Prefuse 73 and Gaslamp Killer for a
tour of the USA, UK and Europe in early 2010. VOICEsVOICEs create a
sempiternal space filled with sounds and imagery that defy what they've
been taught, and challenge what you know. A captivating experiment
where two drummers, knowing nothing of the machines and instruments
they chose to adopt, construct such hauntingly beautiful music, they
awaken even your most subconscious dreams and aversions. A sort of
existential realization can occur when these two lovely girls envelope
you in their rapturous style of melodic, and at times, rough
soundscapes. "Flulyk Visions", with it's droning atmospherics and
vocals looped and inverted almost beyond recognition. Pitchfork / The
fact that they only started playing with their (borrowed) guitars and
effects boxes just over a year ago makes the band even more of a fabled
Echo Park music myth, seemingly ingesting every instrument they lay
their hands on, spewing out staggeringly beautiful walls of noise with
a thunderous, raw drum set.
