...according to our Dave on Wed 23 Dec, 2009.
A sweet new offering from the Phisteria label is in..and a hugely intriguing listen it is too. Its a 10" by Chasing Eudaimonia (or CE if you like to save space). It starts off with a soundscape that creeps upon you like a ghost story from your childhood. The undulating sounds continue and don't let up..until the first side ends. The second side of 'Circles/Waves' is dead ace too, it sounds like some ancient beast being slowly awoken from its slumber, albeit with some Earth-esque synth drone burrowing into its ear. This side has a really sparse feel to it..a simple piano motif and otherwordly vocals ties it together like a really great carpet. Its a challenging listen but underneath there is a very human quality that i feel will touch you deep inside...and it has a really cool sleeve too..buy it now !!!(Cmon its Christmas!!)Chasing Eudaimonia from Copenhagen, Denmark were formed in the summer of 2005 and have since been navigating the musical borderlands between drone, psych and shoegazer.
Circles / Waves is the bands debut EP and it is limited to 300 copies on 10” vinyl in stunning handmade covers, but is also available as a download from iTunes and similar places.
The band has shared the stage with acts like Nadja, Bohren & the Club of Gore, Geniuser, The Great Depression, Wolf Eyes, Growing and Thrones.
Here what some of the danish press had to say:
"...this local band know their way around the outskirts of alternative music, and like true eclectics, they pick a bit of black metal theatricism, a nip of psych beauty, add a hovering drone, and then tone it all the way down to a lush trip.” - review from www.lowcut.dk rated 5 out of 5.
“[Circles is] without a doubt one of the years most beautiful single pieces of danish music!” - translated review from www.geiger.dk
“With stretched out feedback and guitar chords, simple piano loops, synth rumble and abstract female vocals the focus is more on atmosphere than on action. [...] The two long songs stretch lazily towards the sky and the band it not in any hurry to reach their goal. But it is also the listener who must be moved, course this is more of a soundtrack to an inner journey.” - translated review from www.gaffa.dk
