Our album of the week (18th December 2009)

Music for a Sleeping Sculpture of Peter Broderick by Peter Broderick

The Brodericks have been well prolific this year. It seems not a week passes without something new popping up from nowhere with the name Peter or Heather on. Here's a new thing by Peter (Broderick) on the ever useful Slaapwel label. Readers with memories may remember the idea behind this label is or artists to make music to fall asleep to. It's a great idea for a label! I remember I used to all asleep to things all the time but I'd never hear the end of things. Well maybe I did subconsciously... Who knows. The story behind this one is a lady approached Peter at a gig and said he had an interesting face and wanted to do a sculpture of it. Nothing happened for a while but eventually after photos were sent by email to Chrysa Chouliara she made a life size sculpture of Peter Broderick lying in bed with a small motor in his chest (to recreate the effect of breathing) months later. A piece of music was created for this installation and that's what this is. A beautiful thing it is too. Waves of drifty ambience designed to help you the sleepy listener visit the land of nod. Occasionally voices appear, some gentle whistles.... It all reminds me a bit of one of the Orb's more ambient (less techno) moments at times. Not really what you'd expect but I've played this to the end and stayed awake and thoroughly enjoyed it. Later on some sparse piano tinkle appear and elevate proceedings slightly. It's a beautiful way to spend half an hour. 500 only with fancy bits of paper inside, a photo stuck on front and we're currently the only place you can get this in the UK so that's pretty exciting. Happy Xmas folks! 'Music for a Sleeping Sculpture of Peter Broderick by Peter Broderick' is CD only!

We’re rather happy to present you with another wonderful addition to the Slaapwel Records set. Peter Broderick is a talented musician to say the least. He knows how to make wonderful folk songs (“Home”), hauntingly beautiful piano & string compositions (“Float”) and he rocks the violin with Efterklang. But is he also up to the task of making music to fall asleep to? You betcha!

With “Music for a Sleeping Sculpture of Peter Broderick” he delivers the goods. Upon hearing this slow-paced work for vocals, piano and field recordings, I immediately decided this would be an indispensable part of my nighty night set. Toothbrush, pyjama’s, Lars (my secret teddy bear) and "Music for a ..." ! That’s the way it’s gotta be. It’s one long 30 minute piece that slowly evolves and really draws you into the breathtaking dreamworld of Peter Broderick.

This time we’ve made 500 copies. It comes in a hand assembled package with a high quality CD and 3 inserts in a beautiful cardboard box with a picture of a sleeping sculpture of Peter Broderick.
