Remember those "Magic Eye" pictures??? I was convinced my friends were bullshitting me that they could see stuff, until one day it happened…. There was thee unicorn. It genuinely felt like real magic, so exciting (I was mega stoned mind). So this brings me on to the Excellent Eyeballs CD (The third for Blackest Rainbow) 'The Invisible Castle'. The cover is a really cool sorta digital noise image that recalls those Magic Eye pictures, but I'm fucked if I can see a castle there. The audio is proper celestial drone and has a really pretty feel to it. I'm actually totally charmed by the vibes here. In terms of feel I'm reminded a little of James Ferraro's tropical drone stuff (Clear/ Discovery). As the single sixty minute piece evolves it's a really gorgeous journey. There's a ton of drone music around at the moment but 'The Invisible Castle' manages to feel refreshing with its constantly evolving layers. Wonderful stuff from this Newcastle artist who has also recorded for Low Point, Dead Pilot and Bells Hill and is totally worth your attention.

Richard Dawson's project that debuted on Blackest Rainbow earlier this year, which was followed by CDRs on Bells Hill, Low Point and Dead Pilot, and another release on Blackest Rainbow, a split cassette with fellow UK droner Gareth Hardwick. The Invisible Castle is far more intense, and in some ways heavier than the previous releases on BR, but retains Dawson's own dark take on the world of psychedelic drone music, and this is a proper drone release, clocking in an hour for the full piece. Intense and superb! Limited to 1000 copies in pro-printed wallets.
