Our single of the week (18th December 2009)

I just stuck the Astral Social Club side of this split 7" on at what I assume must have been the wrong speed and it sounded like V/VM remixing that Mr. Blobby record from years ago. One to fuck with people at parties and that. At its intended 33rpm 'Smash Crater #1' is yet another gem from the industro-psych-techno-stomper side of Neil Campbell's mind, defying any kind of logic or easy description with its ridiculous melding of sounds, giving the impression of at least three Black Dice records playing at once. Which obviously means it's totally excellent. STOP THE PRESS! Mr. Campbell himself has informed us that 45rpm is actually right and proper. I'm the new, rubbisher John Peel. Glockenspiel I'm unfamiliar with but I'm sure 'Assorted PCP' must be about that guy you always hear about who got fucked on it then cut bits of his face off and fed it to his dog. It's a far dronier peace but there's still plenty happening as they whip up a noisy, slightly shoegazey storm apparently using whatever was to hand at the time, with rhythms of a sort offered by what sounds like an angry, starved, blindfolded and pissed up man being let loose in a professional kitchen with a floor covered in sunflower oil. HANG ON! I've probably done this one wrong too haven't I. They're both pretty great on either speed in any case so you've got four tracks for the price of two - special extra value deal. Just what you want this recession Xmas I'd say.Wheezing skyward born machine groans and gasped tremolo root to a kinetic pulse, while distant melody zones ascend to circulate around the bass flex on this face chewer by Neil Campbell. On the flip is the first vinyl cut by Glockenspiel, flocculent tones weave with tom rub and bowed metal harmonics, drifting on the back of a drum dub to the heart of a snow-blind haze of feedback, amplified string scrape and analogue electronics. Spin at 45. Art by Noah Campbell.
