What can I say about Skullflower that I've not said before??? I think this is the fifth Skullflower release I've written about… And so Matthew Bower's demonic, possessed, black metal machine music gets the 2CD treatment on Neurot in the form of 'Strange Keys To Untune God's Firmament'. If there were a soundtrack to the opening of the very gates of hell then this may well be it. The cover text merely offers track names so it's unclear as to whether this is Bower solo or not??? That aside, what we have here is the man in fine form, you can almost imagine him hunching over his amp and then big wings of bone and leathery flesh bursting out of his back. Anybody that's seeking some proper transcendental harsher stuff after the US post-noise underground has turned to new-age dreamy vibes should look no further. One of the most consistently brilliant, influential and uncompromising "noise" guitar artists, with a double disc, full on sonic assault that will blow your mind. Get ready for the sonic firestorms that precede a nuclear winter."I couldn't agree more with the opening quote of Skullflower's semi-official website. Hearing the tortured distorted and eerily shamanic drones emanate from the stereo for the first time in the early nineties was truly a revelation.
Third Gatekeeper and Obsidian Shaking Codex are two of my all time favourite albums and have been extremely influential on the way my brothers and I approach guitar based heavy music. To grab an electric guitar, drive a loud amplifier to it's physical limit and ride the drone into oblivion is ecstasy and Matthew Bower has been showing us all how it is done for 20 odd years.
Strange Keys to Untune God's Firmament evokes Wagnerian sonic bombast, a Nietzchean worldview, and a warlike cry of rebellion against the false, encased in a whirlwind both psychotropic and psychoacoustic. Each listen brings new themes to the forefront. Not easy listening by anyone's standards, this is not for the faint of heart, but for those willing to submit and immerse themselves in the deep thick waters of self transformation." - Steve Von Till, Neurosis / Neurot
