Carlton Melton are a free form, experimental, psychedelic rock outfit from Northern California who enjoy recording their deep fried, improvised super rock in the pleasant surroundings of a geodesic domes. This is applaudable behaviour in my opinion, especially if you are gonna get totally baked and rock triple hard!!! Their first recording 'Live in Point Arena' was recorded in this fashion and worked out so well that they did it again later in the year, the result being this 'Pass It On' LP. Recorded live using carefully placed omni-directional microphones, this album sounds damn lively, like a real gig. It also kicks of with a totally sweet Hawkwind jam called 'When You're In' before drifting off into the cosmos with tunes like 'Found Children' and the space synth mayhem of 'Off The Grid'. I don't know a huge amount about these guys but this is a great record and totally worth investigating. Reminds me of a less riff orientated Cave in an interstellar krautrock kinda way....if you know what I'm saying. My goodness, and heres another latecomer for the year with a super
limited (500?) redwood - brown vinyl that should get turned into CD
type stuff next year we hope. Another slice of supreme San Franciscan
psyche-melto to be filed alongside Wooden Shjips et al, and UK’s own
Heads, maybe Earthless or White Hills, but this stands real tall
indeed. Taking the cues of Hawkwind and Pink Floyd (theres a heavy
hitting cover of “When you’re in”) to create some great heavy droning
fogged up glass onion sike…know what we’re saying? Recorded in a
genuine geodesic dome by Feats ex-members of Zen Guerilla, and nothing
short of highly recommended.
