“Rollerblades”, the opening track on redoubtable newcomer Eliza Doolittle’s debut EP, initially rolls past you like a warm breeze from Southern California, all gorgeously mellow, downtempo vocals, beautifully sparse arrangements and invitingly vintage vibes. Scratch beneath the pristine surface however, and you’ll find something that goes beyond a simple pop song, something more intriguing and tantalising. But then that’s something which easily applies to Miss Doolittle herself.
The talented Doolittle simply can’t help but be more distinctive and singular than other run-of-the-mill female singer-songwriters. Drawing from a well of influences as disparate as The Kinks, Frankie Valli, Otis Redding and Minnie Ripperton, she creates pop songs with a twist, honing in with laser-like focus on the idiosyncrasies of life, love and modern society, combining confident, intelligent and witty lyricism with hooks so sharp they could take an eye out. Eliza Doolittle has arrived; resistance to her charms would be futile.
Eliza Doolittle EP is released on a very limited 500 run of sexy pink vinyl. Make sure you're on board early.
