HEAD OF LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT is Carl Green, a hermit-like singer songwriter from North East England specialising in peculiar, frugal, alt-pop with wit and wattage. In the mid-noughties he was the shadowy brain behind cartoon indie-poppers The Close-Ups, but few traces of this previous life can be found on his debut album as a fully-fledged solo artist.
I AM LIBERATED is an 11 song celebration of disdain, disappointment and disengagement, with stripped back arrangements (voice, guitar, sparse keys) and poetic, storytelling lyrics. With a sound unique to himself, reference points are hard to find but echoes of Sparks, The Kinks, Pulp, Buddy Holly and even Noel Coward reveal themselves after a few listens.
A limited CD only release on Northern Round Square Records (Green’s own label), I AM LIBERATED is a rare record in all senses of the word, and will appeal to those who seek the unusual without losing sight of the melody.
