Phil Elverum has a new six track mini album out on Latitudes under the guise of Mount Eerie entitled 'Black Wooden Ceiling Opening'. Recorded on the fly at Southern studios after a trip to Norway, the birthplace of black metal, Elverum invokes elements of its spirit here with the title, a reference to Black Metal.... (but made of wood)... you see. These songs are stripped down guitar and vocal tracks devoid of studio trickery which gives this recording a simple, old school Microphones-esque quality. Tracks are primarily one take jobs due to time constraints but the music doesn't suffer for it. Opener 'Black Wooden' is Nordic metal interpreted in a David Grubb's style and 'Marriage' has some cool Maiden style riffage in amongst the folksy melody whilst 'Appitite' is as effective as anything I've heard from Elverum (as either Mount Eerie or The Microphones). Available in super limited quantities, if you enjoy Elverum's work I urge you to track this down.

* Very limited pressing - likely to sell out extremely quickly.

* As usual this Latitudes release is in fan packaging!

* In high summer of 2007, Phil Elverum, in the guise of Mount Eerie, found his way to Southern Studios. Armed with a borrowed guitar and some notebook paper, and with little time before an evening gig, Mount Eerie and Southern's engineer Harvey Birrell recorded the six songs of Black Wooden.
* Black Wooden is the coming together of ideas that had travelled with Mount Eerie for months and had solidified into compositions in the days and hours before the studio session. The title itself refers acutely to the genre black metal-- perhaps less surprising a reference considering black metal often shares Mount Eerie's appreciation with low fidelity production aesthetics (among many other things), and that Phil Elverum had just been in Norway before arriving in the UK.

* Track Listing 1. Black Wooden 2. The Bottomless Pit 3. If We Knew 4. Appetite 5. Marriage 6. Mount Eerie Revealed (version)
