What we say about Grey Onion (W/ The Decomposed Orchestra)
This record left our Brian feeling ecstatic.
Decomposed Orchestra is the guest backer on the new Alexander Tucker thing on Latitudes - he normally trades under his name Duke Garwood - and from the opening seconds i'm stunned at the combination of chamber minimalism & eerie meditative improv at work here. Tucker's precious voice lingers around briefly near the start but for the most part, it sounds on 'Golden Dome' like Free Jazz fighting with Terry Riley or at one juncture, desert Blues executed by Faust.... really cool....I'm shit at reviewing truly great improvisational music as you can't take the piss or compare it to loads of irrelevant, childish toss which I really rather like doing. This sounds like two massively talented musical firebrands having a right old passionate duel, the hairs on the nape of my neck are flexing & tweaking. There's loads of edgy drone, squawking sax and classic minimalist structures fighting for space here but you've gotta wait till over a minute into track three for our Alex to let his vocal chords overwhelm you as the music flutters, swoops & almost collapses under the weight of its beautiful dissonance & majesty. This track 'Grey Onion' - for that is what this mini album is called - is absolutely stunning, I assure you. Great collaboration for sure!! CD on Latitudes in the usual lovely package, vinyl to follow.......soon!

What the label says about Grey Onion (W/ The Decomposed Orchestra):
* As always, Very limited pressing - likely to sell out extremely quickly!
* Foil-stamped, hand-numbered CDs.
* Features Alex withby of Decomposed Orchestra who have an album out on ATP in 2010.
* What Alex does is pretty close to musical alchemy. Carefully constructing and layering fully orchestrated pieces from deceptively simple beginnings using guitar, mandolin, cello and most importantly his voice.
* It's his voice which has always set him apart from other psych/folk explorers: wonderfully English and simultaneously otherwordly, something of his humble and extremely thoughtful nature comes through his self- harmonising and often wordless refrains. Along with a playful sense of humour you can sense something quite melancholy at its core.
* The Latitudes session with Decomposed Orchestra makes a beautiful companion piece to Alex' excellent albums on ATP - the open 'anything goes' format sees him explore much longer compositions and pushing himself in a more psychedelic / freak-out direction. This recording will no doubt serve as an important documentation of this point in the evolving opus of this incredibly talented performer and songwriter.
* Track Listing 1. Golden Dome 2. Algae Age 3. Grey Onion Total Running Time: 25:49
