Here's a weird one... The Gossip and The Raincoats doing a 7" of Monks covers. So we've got the former doing 'Drunken Maria', fuzzing it up a bit, adding a totally passionless vocal and a skronky intro and outro and ending it all after about 90 seconds. Predictably pointless, I'd say. The latter, being generally far, far better equipped for the task of making music, do a much better job of it. Layering up rough and ready harmonies into an almost dubby arrangement, it's a pretty cool listen although clearly not approaching being a patch on the original.. I guess stuff like this gives the originals a wee bit of promotion so in itself it may be echoing my advice: just get Black Monk Time innit. Or even the 7" of 'Complication' that's just come out if you simply must have your micro vinyl.Gossip are: Beth Ditto (Gesang), Nathan Howdeshell (Guitar, Bass, Synth), Hannah Blilie (Drums); The Raincoats are: Ana da Silva (Gesang, Programming), Gina Birch (Gesang, Gitarre); Cover art by Lucia Palacios (play loud!). Mastering by Hans-Joachim Irmler (Faust). Comments by the band members THE RAINCOATS: "The idea for the single with Gossip is a match made in heaven".
GOSSIP: "A dream come true". Release ready for the GOSSIP world tour starting late October.
