7" time with one called 'Surprise Hotel' from Fool's Gold which I was half expecting to be a load of gash but fortunately my ears are happy. What we have here is some very well executed and rather authentic sounding African style pop that makes Vampire Weekend sound ultra-lame. I'm actually finding this really quite uplifting and infectious. I love the way the tempo increases halfway through and the track really shifts gear. Our business lady is reminded of Thrill Jockey band Extra Golden. We're just wondering if this could have something to do with them, what with the gold thing and all that.... Erm apparently not... Anyway I think this is a lot of fun. Out on I Am Sound.Fools Gold is an L.A. based collective that weaves together Krautrock, Western pop aesthetics with Congolese, Ethiopian, Eritrean and Malian music. Founder members, vocalist/bassist Luke Top (who sings mainly in Hebrew) and Lewis Pesacov are joined by a cast of characters born from a city that is a melting pot of neighbourhoods and cultures. This is music made for long, hot nights in the sweltering desert. The cast includes: Orpheo McCord (ex Fall drummer who studied percussion in Ghana) Garret Ray, Jimmy Vincent & Matt Popieluch (members of eclectic rockers Foreign Born) Salvador Placencia (Brazilian/Mexican visual artist), Argentine pop star Erica Carcia, Micahel Tapper (ex drummer of We Are Scientists) and Amir Kenan, Brad Caulkins and Mark Noseworthy. 'Surprise Hotel' is the infectious first single to be taken from their S/t album due out in January 2010 (exclusively via Forte in the UK, ask your rep for a promo) The 7" release also features a remix on the b side by M.A.T.H.E.S. aka Micachu and the Shapes. IAMSOUND records have released Florence & The Machine, Telepathe, Little Boots and cocknbullkid in the U.S. and Fools Gold are the latest addition to their ever expanding family.
