Dibiase / P.U.D.G.E - LA # 1 EP

LA # 1 EP by Dibiase / P.U.D.G.E

The first in a ten-part series of two-headed10-inch EPs from LA-based producers, coming out monthly through 2010, with each in a full colour jacket designed by B+ (Mochilla). Kicking off, Dibiase represents HollyWatts in South LA. Making his presence felt beneath the surface over the last few years, only now is he coming overground, with recently dropped 45s on Detroit’s OTW label and Lancashire’s Fat City. P.U.D.G.E, originally from Jamaica, Queens, has most recently been heard on ‘Beat Dimensions Vol 2’, and not so long ago in the mix for Mary Anne Hobbs. Both beatmakers each serve up five hot lumps of molten rhythm lava to light your lamp, but pressing is limited so be switched on. Full colour artwork sleeve and one pressing only.

All City Records Los Angeles series - there are going to be a total of ten of these, all split 10" records taking a pretty darn thorough look at the current Los Angeles scene.  The first of these sees Dibiase paired with P.U.D.G.E.  All i knew of Dibiase previously was the 12" EP that recently came out on Fat City, though I'm led to believe there's a fair amount of material knockin about the place.  It's on a wonky hip hop tip, and quite sluggish with it, with a lot of A Team and Space Invader-esque samples thrown in for good measure.  The other side of part one comes from P.U.D.G.E., of whom I'd heard only a couple of tracks before.  One from one of the Beat Dimensions compilations, the other from that Ramp compilation.  ArabIncense is the standout track on this side, sounding rather a lot
like Plone with some pretty teasing drums going on in the corner of the room somewhere.  Afrilude's a corker too, but it's annoyingly only 30 seconds long.  P.U.D.G.E. also has an album dropping later in the year on Ramp, I believe, one to look forward to.
