Sitting firmly between soulful electronica and forward-thinking soundscapes, these two Southend On Sea beat collaborators have found new pastures in the fields between Four Tet and Flying Lotus. For their eight-track debut on Civil Music, they have been lent a hand with remixes by luminaries from all strains of electronic music, including Planet Mu's skweee legend Eero Johannes, Black Acre's amazing spacey dub newcomer Blue Daisy, and eclectic Finnish producer Recue, presenting four equally eclectic remixes from the new masters of their respective sounds.
Skwee scene figurehead Eero Johannes has created possibly the perfect remix of opening track ‘Sunflower’ - simple and engaging, quirky, emotive and a pleasure to be swallowed by. Disgustingly deep new darling of beyond-dubstep Blue Daisy has produced a masterpiece with his tribal reworking of ‘Seven Uses Of Potential Difference’. Lo Recordings’ elusive Batfinks created no less than a cosmic explosion with the uncontrollable techy delight that is his remix of ‘Radiance Trigger’, and Recue finishes the package with a take on the same track that delivers classic early Warp/Mu electronic sounds delivered in a decidedly different and modern way.
Of course, ROR’s own quartet of original mixes here are reason enough to get familiar if you’re a lover of new electro eclecticism in the vein of – lets say - Bibio, Scuba, Darkstar, Martyn, Nathan Fake, or 2562. Delicate and endearing, ‘EP1’ is a refined and imaginative tapestry of unselfconscious electronic exploration.
