Safida Ayub is a teacher-trainer from Gulmit, a village in the upper Hunza valley in the Gilgit region of the Northern Areas of Pakistan. This recording was made in Murtazarabad, a village in central Hunza.
She is singing in Burushaski, a language common throughout the Hunza valley, particularly among the majority population of Ismalis. The five songs here include traditional songs, songs written by popular local poets, and songs written by Safida herself.
This recording was made direct to cassette tape in 1996, then digitally transferred some ten years later. It was mastered to reel-to-reel tape by Simon Loynes at HTHQ, Cambridge.
Available information indicates that Safida Ayub is currently working in Afghanistan for the Aga Khan Education Service.
