‘A homegrown Tilly and The Wall. It’s. A little like looking back at Young Marble Giants through a crystal ball, which can only be a good thing……..a great start for the band’ Artrocker Magazine / ’effortlessly charming………… with lyrics that flow with the ease of water into a tune that you inevitably sink into.’ Muso’s Guide / “It’d probably be insulting to suggest comparisons to early Lily Allen but instead the constant rhythmical changes and inspired melodic twists brings to mind a jazzier Michachu & the shapes – either way, this is a work of genius” a Subba-Culture.com SINGLE OF THE MONTH / ‘They are brilliant, have a wonderful name and play a kind of indie/folk/pop with soul and playfulness, I want to hear more!’ – MusicU / ‘Incredibly talented, with something original to say’ – ‘Sup Magazine. Quirky folk rockers Lulu & The Lampshades release their debut single ‘Feet To The Sky’ on new imprint Voga Parochia. ‘Feet to the Sky’ is a beautiful ode to escapism, perfectly capturing the delirious joy of wrenching yourself out of tedious routine and throwing youself into something new – quite fitting for a tune written whilst cycling to Paris on whim. At 4am. On New Year’s Eve. The seeds of Lulu and The Lampshades were first planted in response to baffled expression. Heloise (vocals, uke, melodica, stamping) and Luisa (vocals, accordian, violin) have been putting their names together for years to form Helouisa - bakers of cakes & makers of stupid t-shirts. Helouisa was also the basis of a pretend band that never performed in real life, but consisted in Luisa playing schizophrenically with Garageband alone in her room. Heloise joined after pretending to be a New Yorker for a while, and then they found Jemma (bass, guitar), a real life musician who was already in a band and knew things about chords and notes. Dan (drums, facial expressions) was found on a sofa, where the band finally bonded over their love of household furniture and their determination to see its appreciation in modern day society. Adding dancing lampshades to the line up seemed like an obvious inevitability, doing their bit for the “Dance Like No Ones Watching’ movement. Even more intriguingly they have embraced strange found instruments, employing the use plastic cups, paintbrushes, gramophones, and married them to a joyful musical sensibility. However, there is a darker note to these songs that give bite to the sweetness of the rock ‘n’ roll, anti-folk and Latin American inspired sounds, which is partly attributable to the melancholy force of Luisa’s voice. Having already shared the stage with like-minded souls Soko, Peggy Sue, and Melody Melodica & Me they are currently converting the entire metropolis of London Town into their biggest fans. Their rough-hewn and multi-instrumental tunes, put together with big friendly smiles, fun demeanour and cheeky banter on stage means every crowd that sees them automatically goes home with a new favourite band.
