Righteous Signals, Sour Dudes by Gay Against You

5...according to our on Thu 19 Nov, 2009.

RIGHTOUS SIGNALS/SOUR DUDES!!! Best album title of the week (if not ever) fo'sure!!! Gay Against You are the Glasgow based dual headed electro-clash raven of Lachlann Rattray and Joseph Howe. They are probably the nicest guys on the planet and their album Righteous Signals/Sour Dudes (from here on referred to as RS/SD) is making me so happy I want to ditch work and catch the megabus up to sunny glasgow to give these guys a big hug. I couldn't say enough nice things about these (not so sour) dudes!!! RS/SD totally entertains and terrorizes in equal parts. The programming is ridiculously textured and inventive, the lyrical subject matter is engaging and comically amusing ('Stranded in Jurassic Park' is an immersive journey through said films core storyline and will no doubt make you chuckle) and the tunes are everything modern music should be; insanely creative and constantly on the edge (not the cutting edge though... I mean the edge you might fall off). Everything is covered here ..... electronic/synth pop, progressive rock, disco, afro-beat, tropicalia and hardcore are all fighting for there fair share of RS/SD. I could say more....we could discuss the insane gigs, the awesome artwork courtesy of Arran Ridley, their other amazing projects (ever heard Yoko Oh No?, Germlin?, Ben Butler and the Mousepad?....where you been sour dude?) but there's no time for that, gotta get moving. Upset the Rhythm are doing the vinyl, Adaadat, the CD... that's high praise indeed, with or without your blessing. Cheers Lads.

Gay Against You are the enthusiastic, messy and very, very friendly duo of Lachlann Rattray and Joseph Howe. They are influenced by The Minutemen, Magma and other bands beginning with 'M'. Regardless of these influences, they sound a bit like 'a council estate Butthole Surfers'. With 'Righteous Signals, Sour Dudes', Joe and Lachlann have written a new album which leaps and bounds over their debut 'Musclemilk',  released in 2007. The dual title is symbolic of the struggle for creative compromise and two pals who are still learning how to work together,   they couldn't agree, so they named it twice - it works out. Similarly, the music clashes too, it strikes bargains and agrees to disagree.  The album finds progressive rock trying to sit alongside synth-pop and afrobeat, whilst disco bumps into hardcore, before transcending tropically. There's a lot going on but somehow it makes sense. During the making of this album, GAY AGAINST YOU played many hundred shows across Europe. They've toured constantly playing some less than likely spaces including caves, cellars, boats, roofs and even on the banks of a fjord. Famous show buddies have included No Age, Dan  Deacon, Zombie Zombie, Shitdisco, Lightning Bolt, Mahjongg and Girl Talk, amongst others. GAY AGAINST YOU have recorded numerous radio sessions, including one for Channel 4's Slash Music w/Tom Ravenscroft, BBC Radio One's Vic Galloway / Steve Lamacq / Rob da Bank shows.  The UK and European presses like GAY AGAINST YOU and they can claim to be perhaps the only group to have been featured in both Terrorizer and Attitude magazines. They were (erroneously) thought to have been described  by NME as 'the new shit' in Norway. No proof of this has been found so far.
