Wetdog - Lower Leg

Our single of the week (30th October 2009)

Lower Leg by Wetdog

5...according to our on Thu 29 Oct, 2009.

It's nice to see Angular still keep on going ploughing the spiky post-punk thing even though it's not as fashionable as it used to me. That means they're doing it for the love and not for a quick buck and that's always admirable. Wetdog have a new 7" out on Angular called 'Lower Leg' this week which is great. I've not heard 'em before but immediately I get bits of The Slits and The Raincoats. The song itself reminds me of a Young Knives song and it's annoying me senseless that I can't remember which one it is. Cocks..... Well this is far from cocks. It's great spiky pop music which sounds like it's falling to bits but it somehow manages to stay in one piece relatively unscathed. It's a fantastic pop tune bursting with energy and I'm already in my fifth spin... I will not leave this tune alone. Total single of the week if I ever heard one!!! P x

• After the release of 2008’s ‘Enterprise Reversal’, Wetdog played around the UK
and then quickly set about writing tracks for the follow-up album, ‘Frauhaus!’.
• Comeback single ‘Lower Leg’ is an effortlessly styled catchy tune, a dancefloor
friendly pop gone wrong, wrapped in a beautiful package. It’s their most accessible
recording to date, and is sure to win them many new converts as well as thrill their
existing fans.
• The band have an affinity with Welsh genius, counting Datblygu and Euros Childs
amongst their influences (there are hints of pastoral climes in the melodies), but
‘The Wicker Man’, Syd Barrett and Robert Crumb are just as likely to feature in
any album-related discussions.
• They are oft compared to post-punk artists like The Slits (with whom they are
touring throughout October), but have been equally influential in turn on recent
bands such as Vivian Girls, Trash Kit, Plug and New Bloods.
• Rivka Gillieron (guitar, vox), Sarah Datblygu (drums, vox ) and Billy Easter
(bass, vox) agree on one thing – hard and sparse music contrasting with vocal
harmonies.
• Limited edition 7” (500 copies).
