Embryonic by The Flaming Lips

4...according to our on Fri 11 Dec, 2009.

Hey The Flaming Lips have got a new album out and it's mint. I didn't like the last one very much and I wasn't hugely arsed about Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots even though everyone else totally bummed it (although it did have it's moments) so this is quite exciting really. It was technically out last week though so I'll motor through a quick wee reviewsy. Basically if you like the idea of the rhythmic propulsion of bands like Can, Silver Apples and The United States of America given a fresh lick of modern production paint and installed into crazy pop songwriting (sometimes touching, sometimes a wee bit dark) you'll be shit in luck with the vast majority of 'Embryonic'. Karen O's on a few tunes, MGMT are on one and it's all dead good so buy it if you want to! We fully endorse it!

TRACKLISTING: 1 Convinced Of The Hex, 2 The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine, 3 Evil, 4 Aquarius Sabotage, 5 See The Leaves, 6 If, 7 Gemini Syringes, 8 Your Bats, 9 Powerless, 10 The Ego's Last Stand, 11 I Can Be A Frog, 12 Sagittarius Silver Announcement, 13 Worm Mountain, 14 Scorpio Sword, 15 The Impulse, 16 Silver Trembling Hands, 17 Virgo Self-Esteem Broadcast, 18 Watching The Planets,

OVERVIEW: 'Embryonic' is the latest instalment in The Flaming Lips strange and compelling journey. The eagerly anticipated album released on October 12th on Warner Bros Records sees the Oklahoma natives continue in the same vein that has bagged them three Grammys, a Brit Award nomination and being described as one of the great inventive acts in rock.

Recorded in New York and Oklahoma City between February and July of this year, 'Embryonic' features eighteen new songs. The sound is immediately recognisable as The Flaming Lips, but once more they push the boundaries of sound into uncharted new territory. 'Embryonic' was produced by The Flaming Lips - Wayne Coyne, Stephen Drozd, Michael Ivins and Kliph Scurlock - with Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev) and Scott Booker.

'Embryonic' highlights a number of special guest appearances: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O provides additional singing, screaming, animal sounds and noises on 'Gemini Syringes', 'I Can Be A Frog' and 'Watching The Planets', MGMT contribute additional playing and singing to 'Worm Mountain' and German mathematician, Thorsten Wörmann is responsible for additional spoken announcements.
