Following up the blink and you missed it Peter Broderick 3" disc on Secret Furry Hole, they've only gone and released a similarly hand packaged limited edition and this time it's Fat Cat stalwart Hauschka with 'Small Pieces' which is aptly titled. What we have here are five perfectly formed pieces of Volker Bertelmann's modern classical piano tinkering. The general mood is fairly somber although it does have some rather delightful and uplifting moments. The overall sound is a little more stripped back to pure piano, although you can hear some other little bits happening. I'd guess he's possibly going back to his roots and going for a real timeless sound. An enjoyable and cute little release in its handmade/ stamped sleeve. Whack this on at a dinner party and your mates will think you are dead posh and extremely well cultured. You could even get one of those cigarette holders and a monocle."small pieces" is hauschka's seventh release since 2004. after the great feedback on his "ferndorf" album and the "snowflakes and carwrecks" ep the german pianist is focused on very minimal little pieces with a few or even no preparations.
these 5 songs are small compositions with composed melodies and they seemed to be pictures or little vague and fast impressions of a long train ride.
"sehnsucht" is the german word for "longing" and it is a kind of theme for this record as much as a reference to romanticism. "flingern" -a part of düsseldorf- and "brooklyn" are clear defined places that have stories and on the other side. there is "unknown" and "wohin" which are questions or words that describe insecurity and undefined future.
"small pieces" by hauschka gives us a small view on his idea of longing and the diversity that lies in there -- hauschka-net.de
