I've got this difficult to decipher 7" that i believe is a split from Jana Hunter and her brother John Hunter (under the guise of Inoculist). The Jana Hunter track is called 'Two Cocks Waving Wildly at Each Other Across a Vast, Open Space, a Dark, Icy Tundra' which suggests a little room for humour under the dark canvas of haunting desolate country i'm exposed to on side one. Minimal in it's instrumentation an stark on details, this tune is dark but not completely pitch black. I like the flutes that kick in later providing a nice dynamic for the finale of the track. Jana's brah John takes an equally minimal approach to song writing though the dual boy/girl vocal helps fill the gaps and provides a little warmth to the atmosphere. A perfect song to compliment seasonal changes and the longer autumn nights. Tasteful stuff.Jana Hunter's origins may be behind the title to this track, "Two Cocks Waving Wildly at Each Other
Across a Vast, Open Space, a Dark, Icy Tundra". From the wide voids of Texas, an intensely private
and obscure individual, Hunter has developed a signature sonic topography over the course of her
two acclaimed full-lengths and two EPs, and her work has been called hissy, haunted, and weird.
Hunter's newest work (to which this track could be considered a precursor) is still at times bleak, but
more often rapturous, and resplendent. "Two Cocks..." marks possibly the last music Jana will
release under her name alone. Her next musical incarnation is a full band based in Baltimore with its
own as of yet undisclosed name and identity. Jana and her brother John Hunter have played
together in various incarnations such as in the band Matty & Mossy, and in Jana's touring band.
Inoculist began in 2005 as John Hunterʼs home recording project. Shortly thereafter it blossomed into a more substantial project. After some lineup changes, Inoculist currently exists in Brooklyn as a 3
piece: John (guitar/vocals), Ashlyn Davis (keyboards/vocals), and Ethan Schmid (drums).
“Provenance” serves as a fitting introduction, containing all Inoculistʼs signature elements: original and
unusual melodic arrangements, beautiful dark vocal harmonies, and an attention to song craft that
unfolds with each listen. The split EP will be released as a 7” in a limited edition of 350. We are
excited and proud to bring you this very special family EP. Enjoy and thanks. HBB
