Esther Maria & The Broken Horse are a new one on me. My Black Heart hangs mainly on the talents of the lady in question, with her voice doing justice to some strong songwriting which reminds me a little of Gram Parsons in the more country-tinged moments and Jeff Buckley's 'Sketches..' stuff in the darker, more mysterious tracks (in which the band come more into their own). I've got to say that it's all a bit too polished for my liking but as far as 'singer-songwriter with an acoustic guitar' releases go in this day and age it's pretty good stuff.
”My Black Heart” is the debut EP from Esther Maria & The Song Horse. A release compiled of five tracks, within which many different worlds meet. Esther Maria lives and works in Aarhus, Denmark, but has her roots in Derby, England. Besides singing jazz for 10 years she has strong roots in alternative country and folk.
The EP is a result of strong song writing, where fiction, mystery and reality are bound together with a literary nerve and a voice with great nuances and expression.
When the song “What Is It You Want” got repeated airplay on Danish National Radio the words were: “Her music encompasses both rock and melancholic country music. Her voice is both raw and unrefined as well as fine and beautiful – and she writes songs as well as a Jeff Buckley could have done it.”
Esther Maria & The Song Horse participated with a track on the compilation “SOPA Curiosa” in the fall of 2008 to which one Danish reviewer remarked:
”Let me single out Esther Maria, who in the interplay with the acoustic guitar unfolds her very distinctive vocal – theatrical and vibrant like the voice of a long forgotten 30s jazz singer. Not unlike Bianca Casady of CocoRosie.”
