Devil Wolf Men by Oren Ambarchi / Lasse Marhaug

When a package of some really cool stuff arrived from Lasse Marhaug's Norwegian experimental/ noise label Pica Disk arrived I thought this 'Devil Wolf Men' 7” record was by Australian sound artist Robin Fox as the sleeve is a picture of him rocking an amazing Elvis cool/ Jesus Christ shaggy beard look. A quick peek at the text reveals that it is actually a Lasse Marhaug/ Oren Ambarchi collaboration and as I approach the turntable with vinyl in hand I'm very intrigued as to what will come out of the speakers... Oh this 7” is dinked oldskool style so I need my “Adaptor”.  I believe 33 1/3 is the correct speed here and I'm struggling to articulate what I'm hearing which for me is a very good thing. The vocal samples are totally deranged and sit amongst some messed up abstract kind of theatrical noise with string sampling (I think) fun. It's totally demonic with its warped baby crying  along to kung fu chops and snarls over thundering low end. Then we're into wild west cinematic action put through a blender with a stomping drum beat. Totally unique although I would say as reference point that this is the kind of clever trash you might expect Steven Stapleton to come up with. Imagine you're being suffocated while having an amazing Enter The Dragon nightmare and that might get close. Weird and wonderful and I'm itching to flip the record over. Oh this is equal parts beautiful and deranged and sounds like Ennio Morricone being savaged by wolves during a thunderstorm. Total madcap growling, water sounds and weirdo craziness. This has been put together with total class. Towards the second half it feels like a young Yamatsuka Eye hi-jacking a Finders Keepers compilation. Marvelous gear all round. Totally gets my seal of approval. A plunderphonics/noise extravaganza!

"Devil Wolf Men" is a tapestry of location recordings and studio collaborations made during Ambarchi and Marhaug's tour of China in 2005. Your world will not be the same.
