Ducktails
Landscapes
A Norman Records recommendation (10th September 2009)

This record left our Business Lady feeling ecstatic.
You know i'm digging the sweet sounds of Matthew Mandanilee a.k.a Ducktails. You know i'm digging the new L.P (well new to us) 'Landscapes' out on Olde English Spelling Bee. Mandanilee has fallen upon a winning formula of jangly, sun-drenched instrumentals that seems to improve with every new release. With 'Landscapes' he's even blessed us with a proper awesome super tune (and potential single me thinks) in the form of 'Landrunner'. The majority of 'Landscapes' treads simi liar ground to the s/t L.P and Back Yard but with new, improved vigor. Structures seem more solid, ideas are more confident and the production is a little more polished. The best thing is the nice mix of sounds and styles, you could easily interpret Back Yard to be one eternal bedroom space jam where as the tracks on 'Landscapes' really stand out as individual compositions. You've got the psyche rock jam of the aforementioned 'Landrunner', there are hints of early Durruti Column in 'Roses' and 'Welcome Home (i'm back)' and there's even a tune that reminds Brian of Emeralds though there's a fair bit of Steve Reich and Phillip Glass in there too. Flip it over and you've got a real nice Woods style country ballad, some sun fried folksy jam and some great ambient moments. Definitely the most consistent and convincing release so far. Amazing.
