Now then, Dan Edelstyn & The Cardboard Orchestra and their 'Germans In Space' 7". You may or may not be surprised to hear that this is a reasonably dodgy 'comedy indie' record that in sound terms reminds me a bit of such late 90s post-Beck dross as Bran Van 3000. I bet Jo Whiley's probably got one of these at home.Dan Edelstyn is a space-age renaissance man. He writes pop oddities reminiscent of Sparks, Beck and The Beta Band which he performs with The Orchestra of Cardboard, a backing band of life-size cardboard cut-out musicians. Dan and the Orchestra strut their stuff in front of backscreen video projections. Germans In Space is a historical sci-fi fantasy based on the notion of a group of German scientists who escaped the Holocaust. It’s inspired by “me reading a lot of H.G.Wells and Jules Verne and apocalyptic predictions”. In addition to his music, Dan is directing his debut full length feature documentary film for More 4’s True Stories strand. The film is about the life of his Jewish grandmother Maroussia, who fled the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 and ended her days as a Republican sympathiser in Belfast. In addition to the music and the film-making Dan is importing a Ukrainian vodka, Zorokovich 1917, made in the distillery once owned by his great-grandfather Ilya until taken by the Bolsheviks in 1917.
