Cave In!!!! Haven't heard from these boys in a while. I believe they had a brief hiatus after been fucked over royally by the business men in suits, contracts and bad taste.....poor fellas. Cave In emerged 14 years ago as the remedy to a stifling hardcore scene, much like Converge they used the power of thrash metal to rejuvenate the sound of underground hardcore. Later came an influx in space rock, this was the turning point that took the band to greater heights. Now they trade in ultra powerful technically savvy (prog?) rock in a similar vein to Mars Volta and such whilst readdressing the balance by bringing a little hardcore back into the mix. New E.P 'Planets of Old' is chocker full of powerful riffage which is something we don't get much of in the office nowadays! 'Retina sees rewind' best exemplifies their ability to weave a tech tapestry of prog power, it's got a sweet octave based solo line that fully rips. 'The Red Trail' sounds old school to me, pure thrashy hardcore elevated by massive production and wild guitar soloing. Final track 'Air Escape' seems like the wild card of the bunch, it's a relatively straight forward melodic rock number for Cave In. The vocal is like pure 70's rock and reminds me of some of the more ridiculous Boris cuts!! So, four very different tracks from one crazy rock band. If you've missing Cave In you'll be well pleased with this offering.
