Apparently Joshua Burkett is a highly respected member of the lo-fi, avant garde aristocracy. I've not really heard him before but I'm liking this reissue of 'Owlsleavesrustling' on blue vinyl. It's a right meandering, clanking, woozy, muffled, random, blurred journey. Picture a man mumbling into a broken mike the words he's squinting to read off a damp matchbook whilst a muddied detuned acoustic guitar merges with quasi-industrial clanging before it all goes apeshitmental free jazz with this wasp-like electric guitar buzzing angrily out of some shit amp, delirious chuntering, skewed sax blurting everywhere. This is precisely what I wanted Sun City Girls to sound like & has been compared by my esteemed, learned buddy Brett to the legendary Destroy all Monsters in its anarchic, experimental attitood. Later on there's some wild slow galloping folk/jazz face off and i'm just hooked. Then I realise i'm only half way through side one & I make a mental note to investigate this volatile & fascinating platter further, at the first available juncture. Love the flutes too, like butterflies on strong acid fluttering through your conscience - this is one free spirited headfuck.Originally released in a micro-run of 200 in 1996 as the first release on Joshua's own Feather One's Nest label, it is with deep honor and respect Spirit of Orr has prepared this reissue version with hopes that it will be as much a treasure to hold as the original. We have carefully used the same stampers as the original, however this edition will be pressed in colored vinyl. Also included will be a booklet containing art from Joshua, and an extensive set of liner notes with impressions of this record from several of your favorite record heads, Angela Sawyer, Clint Simonson, John Olson, Thurston Moore, Willie Lane and more... This reissue will be housed in recycled lp jackets much like the original, though this time the jackets will be reversed with taped spines and a reversal of the original art.
