New mesmerising album from the inimitable British songbird and
guitar goddess Gemma Ray, tipped by Mojo to be the next big thing.
The ‘Lights Out Zoltar’ album was written within three months of the release of her debut. It
features a guest appearance Joe Gideon of Joe Gideon & The Shark, on the duet ‘1952’. The
album released a month earlier in Germany to extraordinarily sweeping acclaim, and hit the Rolling
Stone Top 20 chart on week of release.
‘100 MPH’, the first single from the album, was recently voted Record Of The Week by the
listeners of Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie’s Radio 2 show.
Mojo magazine have embraced Gemma Ray and are touting her as Britain’s most important singer
/ songwriter. She contributed a beautiful version of George Harrison’s ‘Long, Long, Long’ on
Mojo’s 40th Anniversary White Album CD. Gemma also soundtracked the acclaimed horror film
Mum & Dad, starring Perry Benson. Fans of Gemma Ray include Jimmy Page, Nick Cave And
The Bad Seeds, Beth Orton, Seasick Steve and many more, and her excellent band will be
touring throughout Autumn and Winter 2009.
“A wonderful debut album. Gemma weaves an entrancing tapestry of soul, blues and pop. With
Duffy, Adele and Amy Winehouse reaching the higher end of the charts, it’s clear girl singers are all
the rage, but few are as raw and honest” – The Sun, “Disarming...swooning. Ray sits between Nina
Simone and Isobel Campbell and is all the better for it” – Mojo, “Gemma’s music defies easy
categorisation. Imagine PJ Harvey in thrall to the Shangri-Las: minor key squalls, straight, sparkling
pop and full girl group majesty” – Word.
