Yura Yura Teikoku - Dekinai/Sweet Surrender

Dekinai/Sweet Surrender by Yura Yura Teikoku

Japan s Yura Yura Teikoku are a bona fide institution at home, arguably the only underground psychedelic group there to have achieved overground success. They ve gathereda huge following over the past 20 years, yet become progressively stranger and moreexperimental, cramming both weird and classic influences into a unique, potent form. The band has had a devoted following right from the start early shows were packedwith worshipping, tape-recorder-wielding art school kids who shaved their eyebrows toresemble striking, alien-esque singer / guitarist / leader Shintaro Sakamoto. Practicallyovernight, with the release of their second album, 333, their fanbase exploded. Since1999, getting tickets to their performances has been near impossible shows sell out ina matter of minutes. Their widespread popularity strikes most followers of undergroundpsychedelic music as just plain weird. But what s truly weird is the way they ve followedtheir masterpiece 333 with six uncompromising albums of brilliance, inspiration, andgrowth. Dekinai and Sweet Surrender pair a deep, fuzzed-out rhythm section withSakamoto s hypnotic wail for two of the weirdest dance tracks ever put to tape, like T-Rexjamming with ESG. And the album version of Beautiful trades the EP counterpart slush, power pop à la Big Star for a percussion-heavy jam with hints of doo-wop.Like all previous Yura Yura Teikoku releases, Hollow Me and the accompanyingBeautiful EP were recorded at Nakamura Soichiro s (of Japanese psych legends WhiteHeaven) Peace Studio, and produced by You Ishihara (also ex-White Heaven)
