I've been given the Mount Eerie CD - its called 'Winds Poem'. Mount Eerie is the alter ego of Phil Elverum aka The Microphones. His output over the years has certainly been hit and miss, the highlight was for these ears The Microphones album 'Mt Eerie'. So the band is now what used to be the album title. Confused yet? The album seems to be split between very noisy distorted pieces with vocals buried deep in the mix. A little too deep i think as its very difficult to tell that there's something going on beyond the shards of noise. The second type of song contains beautiful drifty compositions with organ drones, quietly murmured vocals and brushed drums. The sound is reminiscent of several underground luminaries particularly Low, the lesser spotted drifty side of Yo La Tengo and Bonnie Prince Billy. At its best it has the blissed out ambience of La Bradford with twangy guitars sitting atop beautiful organ drones. Also Songs Ohia's wonderful 'Ghost Tropic' album is brought to mind. Some of the songs don't quite hit the mark and it does take a bit of getting into. Its certainly hard on a couple of listens to fully take in whats going on with a record such as this and whats lying beneath the surface but first impressions do bode well that it could be one of those records that will help see you through a deep dark winter.We calculate your shipping costs by taking the heaviest item in your order and calculating that at the 'Heaviest Item' price.
