Our single of the week (18th September 2009)
...according to our Brian on Thu 17 Sep, 2009.
Haven't been paying much attention to the Hyperdub 12" compilation series so far but 5.2 is here & the Zomby tune is fucking ace! It's the most sublime techno track I could imagine him doing with these sweet arpeggiated keys cascading all over a discreetly banging mid-tempo Detroit pulse with some icy snare cracks & this cool alien buzz of a synth line that occasionally creeps in, reminding me of 'Lapdance' by N.E.R.D. Samiyam's staggered wonkyisms are just plain annoying, however - I merely feel like kicking him in the nads for his brief jerky offering after all Zomby's effort but on the actual A side, Joker & Ginz offer up a brooding slice of grinding instrumental bump'n'grind that sounds well space age whilst maintaining a cracking earthscorching R'n'B meets chunky rave groove. So, to sum up - two proper amazing new-skool floor burners and a minor crock of shit. That makes an essential purchase in my eyes!October 2009 heralds the release of ‘5’, a double CD marking Hyperdub’s five years of life as a record label. Honouring past, present and future in equal measure, ‘5’ is comprised of one disc of prior highlights, and one of freshly-composed material contributed by Hyperdub artists and close friends. A series of five 12-inch EPs featuring a selection of the new tunes will be issued, one per week, leading up to the release of ‘5’. The initial pressing quantity of these EPs will be dictated by preorder demand, and none will be repressed, nor will they be made available digitally, before the complete CD collection is on sale. ‘Hyperdub 5.2 EP’ contains three previously unreleased tracks : Joker & Ginz – ‘Stash’, Zomby – ‘Tarantula’, and Samiyam – ‘Roller Skates’.
