The first 12" in the series celebrating 5 years of Hyperdub is with us and it kicks off what looks like will be a cool series of 12"s and a 2CD set. Label boss Kode 9 is reunited with the Spaceape once more and its clear to hear how their sound has progressed since the labels inception. The track uses one line of Ape man's dialogue "Do You See What I See" which sits in the mix with a female vocal that I reckon we have you over a big system. The rhythm is driven with some funky shuffling hand claps and all in all it's not bad at all. It has some Dr Dre/ G-Funk synth action in there too which seems to be popular with the purple people.... Like Black Chow with his track 'Purple Smoke' which has an oldskool Bristol sound happening. Flying Lotus drops by with a bottle of Ouzo and his trademark skewed electro wonk hop or whatever their calling it this week. Our Business Lady is feeling this one and a quick look around the office detects a few nodding heads. All tracks are previously unreleased.... Oooh fancy new Hyperdub sleeves too.October 2009 heralds the release of ‘5’, a double CD marking Hyperdub’s five years of life as a record label. Honouring past, present and future in equal measure, ‘5’ is comprised of one disc of prior highlights, and one of freshly-composed material contributed by Hyperdub artists and close friends. A series of five 12-inch EPs featuring a selection of the new tunes will be issued, one per week, leading up to the release of ‘5’. The initial pressing quantity of these EPs will be dictated by preorder demand, and none will be repressed, nor will they be made available digitally, before the complete CD collection is on sale. ‘Hyperdub 5.1 EP’ contains three previously unreleased tracks : Kode9 & The Spaceape ft. ChaCha - ‘Time Patrol’, Black Chow – ‘Purple Smoke’, and Flying Lotus – ‘Disco Balls’.
