Belladonna - Hey Weirdo!

Hey Weirdo! by Belladonna

3...according to our on Thu 30 Jul, 2009.

Belladonna are a two super tough punk chic's from Darlington. They cut their teeth playing the rough working men's clubs of the North-east so, you know they are like, totally bad ass. 'Hey weirdo' is their debut album, it's a husky and sexy hard. Imagine if Queens of Noise made a record, this is what it would sound like.

Garage punk with distorted bass and maniacal drumming by two riotous girls from Darlington who rejected everything they had begun to hate about being in bands, and gelled together everything they loved about punk, rave, and hanging with your best mate.

Sarah and Claire are devoted music loving party kids who thrive on a backbone of drums and fuzz bass, samples, hissy fits, bleeps and belly shaking sub bass. Claire sings and plays bass guitar whilst Sarah yelps and harmonises whilst rolling out the beats. It’s a simple set up perfectly executed with spirit and conviction. They cut their teeth playing Geordie working mens clubs and venues of ill repute in the North East, so they’ve been toughened up and are rarely phased. Belladonna often attract confused punters expecting to see a live show from the other Belladonna, a hardcore porn star.

Belladonna spent 2009 writing and recording their debut album Hey Weirdo! at Newcastle’s Trinity Heights with producer Fred Purser from cult Punk/New Wave bands Penetration and Tygers of Pan Tang.

The girls take late night practice sessions in a studio haunted by a violent female spectre who has been known to assault other bands but seems to have taken a shine to Belladonna so leaves them alone, occasionally tapping along in time.

Debut single Don’t Be Fooled By the Romance is already getting spins on Radio One, XFM (on Ian Camfield’s Rock Show), 6Music (from Tom Robinson), NME Radio (from Chris Martin) and Kerrang! Radio (from Emma Scott and Johnny Doom). The remix from Electro / Breaks act McQueen is getting heavy support from Annie Nightingale who charted the track in her top ten and Rennie Pilgrem gave the track 4/5 in IDJ magazine.

Don’t be Fooled By The Romance, the single is released August 3rd with the album Hey Weirdo! released August 10th
