The Pastels are a great band! We all know that their influence plagues the glasgow indie pop scene like a fever and it's always a pleasure to hear new music from this old school crew. Who's in the Pastels nowadays? Richard tells me he saw them with Gerry Love of Teenage Fanclub playing with them recently, apparently sporting a Bill Gates look!! Not bad. OK, so this single is a collaborative effort from The Pastels and Japan's twee pop sensation Tenniscoats. Obviously, these two groups have a lot in common so a collaboration makes sense and, you'll be pleased to hear, works really well. 'Vivid Youth' is a corker of an indie pop gem, co-written with Gerry Love this tunes shimmers and sways in the summer breeze. Part indie pop, part Motown style R&B classic, it makes God Help the Girl sound like they're not really trying. An awesome little tune. The B-side is a well executed cover of 'About you' by Jesus & Mary Chain. It's well good. Not sure if it was necessary to include the instrumental version, maybe they are trying to encourage a little J&MC karaoke in the home or at the discotheque? Who knows?
‘Vivid Youth’ / ‘About You’ is the first single to be taken from the
forthcoming Pastels / Tenniscoats collaboration album ‘Two Sunsets’.
‘Vivid Youth’ is a song co-written by
Katrina Mitchell and Gerry Love of
Teenage Fanclub.
‘About You’ is a cover of the
Jesus & Mary Chain
‘Darklands’ album.
The Pastels are from Glasgow and Tenniscoats from Tokyo. They have
different sounds but something in common too. This collaboration which
eventually became the ‘Two Sunsets’ album arose from a suggestion by
Tenniscoats that some studio time be booked while they were in Glasgow,
just to see what happens, and maybe to try to find out what it is that they
have in common.
With the rise of the Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls and Pains Of Being Pure
At Heart, the Pastels influence and relevance has been felt here and across
the pond, they are fast becoming a name to drop in modern music circles.
6 Music have been supportive of the single with plays from Gideon Coe and
Marc Reily.
Pastels / Tenniscoats will be touring in September, with a performance at the
Mosely Folk Festival and further dates in Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham &
Bristol.
