Nudge's last album was called Cache, which is quite funny because I've had to read the press release for As Good As Gone via Google's cache because the rickety old website is broken. Well I tittered. Nudge is dudes from Fontanelle, Strategy and Valet and they make an interesting broth of ambient dub post-rock soul pop which skillfully walks the tightrope across the dreaded Coffee Table Abyss and makes it right the way to The Righteous Cliff of Victory.. Parts of it remind me a little of what Leila's been doing recently, albeit less kaleidoscopic. It's a blissful ride and it's got a picture of a massive tank on the back. Makes you think, dunnit. Nudge returns with a slow burning full-length of sounds perfect for the dying days of the summer’s swelter.
This is the second album on Kranky for Nudge and the follow up to 2005 Cached.
Nudge is Brian Foote (Fontanelle) with collaborators Paul Dickow (Strategy) and Honey Owens (Valet).
Brian is also known as a producer for Lotus Plaza and Atlas Sound amongst others.
Masterfully blurring the music’s entangled live and programmed approaches to the point of imperceptibility, layer upon layer of synth, guitar and vocals are draped over skeletal pop structures and anchored by dub bass-lines born of resin-stained fingers.
Nudge has been busy collaborating with Valet and Strategy, racking up mix/production credits with Atlas Sound, Lotus Plaza and Signaldrift, and touring as an ensemble player of Valet and Atlas Sound Music Group.
