Indigo_Transform by Robert Henke

Oh man, I love Robert Henke and everything but I'm not sure what I've done to deserve reviewing two CDs made under his own name in a row. It's not that it's bad or anything, I don't think he's got a bone in his body that doesn't have 'high quality' scrawled all over it in permanent marker by The Lord Himself, but this stuff's always arty installation stuff and I find that really hard to write about away from its intended context. Instead I'm reduced to imagining Robert doing his excitably camp little dances (check out his Monodeck demonstrations for examples) while this stark, elemental machine drone does its moody business all over my aural landscape. Water does seem to be a bit of a theme though, from the cover art to the sound of falling droplets which litter the single track, and it's that that makes me think that Indigo_Transform would make a wonderful soundtrack to a Tarkovsky film.. Stalker in particular. That's high praise I reckon.

Limited to 1000 copies, digipack. In early October 2008, Swedish installation artist Fredrik Wretman contacted ROBERT HENKE, because he wanted to use MONOLAKE's Indigo piece for an installation.  HENKE liked the idea, but found it a bit inappropriate to simply play back the same song again and again in a loop. So he isolated some elements from the original piece and transformed them into slowly evolving atmospheres to match the aura of Fredrik's installation.  During the installation the music is played back from three CD players, each of them containing a slightly different version of the soundscape, each with a different playing time and each fed to speakers located in different parts of the gallery. As a result, things never fully repeat, and the sound is slowly travelling thru the space. This release  is a stereo mixdown as if all three CDs are started at the same time.
