What we say about L. Mansion, by Sic Alps
This record left our Business Lady feeling happy.
Sic Alps have yet to really impress me but they seem pretty popular with the office folk so maybe i should give 'em a wide birth. Saying that I'm digging A-side 'L. Mansion' from the outset. It sounds like it was recorded thirty years ago and has been sitting in some clued up psyche pop collectors vault until the time is right for a psyche revival, i guess now is as good a time as any. It's simple little doo wop-esque rock'n'roll composition striped down the essential elements with the vocal playing the largest role. It sounds great and is making me want to revisit earlier Sic Alp's efforts. B-side 'Super Lungs my supergirl' is a Donovan cover performed convincingly with a ton of enthusiasm. It's worth hearing if only for the insane guitar solo and the mutant take on the original Donovan vocal. Psyche!!!
What the label says about L. Mansion, by Sic Alps:
Sic Alps make music with their eyes on the past but theirfeet firmly in the present. Bits of psychedelia, folk, garage, punk, and other fuh fairly well flow from their fingers, seamlessly worked together to render easy categorizationspointless. Over the course of numerous singles and albumson such fine labels as Siltbreeze, Mt. St. Mtn., and Woodsist,Sic Alps Mike Donovan and Matt Hartman havecarved themselves a snug niche filled with fuzz, crackle, vibes, and most of all, cracking tunes.Continuing this fine tradition is L. Mansion, a swinginglittle folk / beat tune that is totally timeless / out of timein the way of Sic Alps best songs. It s as straightforwardly pop as anything they ve done, and a totally effective summertimesingle. On the flip is a banging cover of the otherDonovan s ode to puff Superlungs. Wild and thumping, the pair have definitely taken the Sunshine Supermanon a little side trip to Detroit rock city. Two great sides ofSic Alps then, and another genre-busting addition to their excellent discography.
