The Gaslamp Killer
My Troubled Mind EP
A Norman Records recommendation (14th August 2009)

This record left our Ant feeling happy.
Having freshly mixed up a disc for Manchester's Finders Keepers imprint, the word on the street is that The Gaslamp Killer is the new DJ Shadow... Either that or Shadow is the old Gaslamp Killer. It's a fair comparison I suppose as it's immediate that this chap is somewhat of a crate digger, always searching for that sample. I must say as far as this stuff goes it's well decent. Dark heavy fairly uptempo hip hop that gets screwed and tweaked at the EQ so it gets distorted and rough sounding, all the while futuristic sci-fi synths hover and twilight zone vibe type of shit is happening. It gets sorta heavy too with like B-movie theramin action. The flip is like a more organic take on the wonky LA hip-hop type thing but it twists and turns with little surprises throughout. Both sides are pretty fluid in their execution. Limited edition 10", numbered of 2000 copies and signed. If you dig Coldcut, Sixtoo and that kinda gear then this is worth a sniff. It's kinda pricey though! Oh and its title is 'My Worried Mind'. He doesn't sound like he's got much to worry about... Not like me... Earlier I found my Beavis and Butthead fridge magnet in the kids paddling pool but apparently neither of them put it in there - cue theremin.

What their label says...
Strictly limited pressing of 2000 copies for the world, signed and numbered by the hand of the Gaslamp Killer hissel. We don’t even know how many tracks are on this pup yet, but we can report I’ll be a feast of Turkish, Indian, Russian, Italian and Mexican samples, chopped and looped with some extra keys played by Computer Jay. With the digital version released on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, you know all the hippest kids will be hunting this down like sharks to blood.
