So for the past month or two i've been coming in on a saturday to mountains of orders from far flung places like Ossett, Penistone.,Mexborough, South Emsall and Hooton Pagnell. West and South Yorkshire towns forgotten places - a bus or train ride from Leeds but in terms of cultural significance a million miles away. The reason for this is that we have been kindly given an amount of the new Cribs album. the limited edition version which for a lot less than 15 quid you get the brand new album 'Ignore the Ignorant', a live album plus a DVD. It comes in fold out case with booklet. Its a delicious looking thing. I do like the idea that only shops in certain geographical areas can sell it though i would have preferred it if they'd kept to their native area of Yorkshire and not included Lancashire or Portland (indie rocker retirement community). Also theres a bonus for me - I've been promised a flapjack if I can review the music. The Cribs are one of those bands that I can't really recall ever hearing or if I have then I can't remember any of their tunes. Firstly, as an aside, they look a shambles. The singers hair is really dreadful - its kind of combed forward but in no discernible shape or style. His head looks bigger than his hair. The veteran guitarist Johnny Marr has joined them for this album which is kind of like George Harrison joining the Smiths. I'm not sure what he brings to this record but i'm sure reviewers will gravitate to 'We Share the Same Skies' or 'Last Years Snow' and point out that the jangle of the Smiths so long dormant has returned. They say this every few years with whoever Marr is playing with and its usually a false dawn. So what do the Cribs actually sound like? Its reasonable guitar indie stuff. For people like me raised on the strange melodies and lyrical oddities of the aforementioned Smiths or the angular pop noise of the Pixies or The Fall it sounds a trifle bland in places. That said they produce guitar pop thats extremely assured and at their best have anthemic songs that lock into your brain and raise themselves above the dross that passes itself off as 'indie' music these days. You can certainly hear the lads records collections in the songs with echoes of Sonic Youth or Joy Division peeping through the songs and to these ears they should bring this to the fore a bit more often. Maybe next time.We calculate your shipping costs by taking the heaviest item in your order and calculating that at the 'Heaviest Item' price.
