We seem to be living in a special time for C. Spencer Yeh 7"s at the moment, I think this is the third one in a couple of weeks. On 'Live at the CAC 7.21.08' he's scratching away manically on a violin like a John Cale possessed (yes I know he played the viola before we get inundated with angry letters) while Jon Lorenz honks away lyrically on the sax like an Evan Parker possessed while Ryan Jewell hits the drums like a Caroline Corr possessed (I jest, I jest). It's good, solid improv discordance what's a lot of fun!2 sides of bent frown jazz from the hardcore supergroup of Lorenz, Yeh and Jewell. Side a comes on all fifth dimension hard think: violin scrunch and squeal, hard tom rub and dense harmonic blowing pushed right to the front of your brain box, jams a frantic fanfare with locked horn and strings before giving in with a wheeze and a tinkle. Side b's call and answer shies away as fragments fragment into bowed skin, seesaw string microtone and rasped mouthpiece until spunk rock free jizz looseness explodes in downtown turntable street.
